Colombia election sets stage for potential fossil fuel policy shift

Abelardo de la Espriella, a conservative Trump-endorsed candidate, won by about 1 percentage point and is set to be sworn in on Aug. 7, after which energy policy could change.

Colombia’s presidential election has set up a possible shift in the country’s energy direction, with conservative, Trump-endorsed candidate Abelardo de la Espriella winning by a margin of just 1 per cent over Iván Cepeda.

De la Espriella is scheduled to be sworn in as president on Aug. 7, and OilPrice says his agenda could bring changes across major sectors, including energy. The outlet notes that current President Gustavo Petro had pushed a green energy transition during his tenure and was vocal about moving away from fossil fuels.

OilPrice also points to de la Espriella’s broader platform, including a promise to target criminals and build 10 mega-prisons, while highlighting that Petro pursued reforms such as overhauling tax and health systems and attempting peace talks with organized criminal groups.

According to OilPrice, Petro’s administration emphasized climate policy, while de la Espriella’s expected approach is likely to extend to energy policy as he looks to change how Colombia manages the fossil fuel sector.
