Argentina’s Vaca Muerta shale growth boosts energy security in the Americas

Argentina’s government data for June 2026 shows oil output at 868,763 barrels per day and natural gas at 5.4 billion cubic feet per day, still well above levels from a decade ago.

OilPrice says Argentina’s record unconventional oil and natural gas output from the Vaca Muerta shale is strengthening energy security across the Americas, with shale now accounting for more than 70% of the country’s hydrocarbon production.

The outlet cites June 2026 government data showing Argentina’s oil production at 868,763 barrels per day, 2% lower month over month, but 12.6% higher than a year earlier.

For the same period, OilPrice reports natural gas output of 5.4 billion cubic feet per day, which was 1.2% lower than May 2026 and 3% below June 2025.

OilPrice adds that when development began in earnest in June 2016, Argentina lifted 500,580 barrels of crude oil and 4.4 billion cubic feet of natural gas per day, and it notes crude oil has risen 74% and natural gas is up 23% over the last decade.
