Angola’s Katambi-2 appraisal well confirms oil and gas reservoir potential
Initial tests at the Katambi-2 well returned a stabilized rate of 1,160 barrels a day of condensate and 41 MMscfd of gas, with no water or hydrogen sulfide found, supporting development viability.
OilPrice reports that Angola’s state-owned Sonangol and partner ANGP have completed drilling and testing of the Katambi-2 appraisal well in Block 24 of the Benguela Basin.
The outlet says Katambi-2 crossed two productive intervals, confirming reservoir quality that was higher than metrics recorded at the Katambi-1 well drilled by BP more than a decade ago. It also notes Sonangol and ANGP drilled Katambi-2 about 1.3 kilometers from the earlier well, after BP had exited the stake, citing that the discovery was not commercially viable.
According to OilPrice, initial tests showed a stabilized production rate of 1,160 barrels a day of condensate and 41 million standard cubic feet per day of gas. The outlet adds that no water or hydrogen sulfide was found in the well, and that a first full flow test on a non-associated gas reservoir indicated the well has potential to produce more than 100 MMscfd.
OilPrice also states that Angola is looking to reverse years of falling oil production, and that the Katambi-2 results could support efforts to optimize national output.
