South Korea plans a cybersecurity AI model after US export curbs

South Korea aims to build the model by year end, as analysts cite gaps in AI software, computing capacity and large scale training for a frontier rival.

South Korea plans to develop a cybersecurity focused artificial intelligence model by the end of 2026, after a brief US clampdown on advanced systems highlighted the risks of relying on foreign technology for national cyber defense, according to SCMP Economy.

The longer term goal is to build a more capable frontier model that could compete with the world’s most advanced systems, but analysts said the effort would require Seoul to close persistent gaps in AI software, computing capacity and large scale training.

Science and ICT Minister Bae Kyung-hoon unveiled the plan after Washington imposed new export restrictions on several advanced AI models, including Anthropic’s Mythos 5. He said AI can be used to identify security vulnerabilities and exploit them more easily, so the country needs to prepare its defenses accordingly.

The initiative also fits a broader push for AI sovereignty, with other governments in Japan, Britain, Canada and across the European Union investing in domestic models and computing infrastructure to reduce reliance on foreign providers.
