Trump accuses China of election data manipulation in confrontational address
The prime time remarks included domestic warnings ahead of November midterms and renewed pressure on US media to broadcast the speech live.
In a confrontational prime time address, US President Donald Trump accused Beijing of orchestrating what he called the largest compromise of election data in history, and he warned against Chinese interference ahead of the November midterm elections, SCMP Economy reported.
The speech also framed the administration as ending US complacency toward China, while pressing for changes aimed at improving election integrity and defending US military actions.
SCMP Economy reported that community leaders and citizens among Chinese-Americans expressed concern that they could again become scapegoats if the White House judges election results unsatisfactory, with some pointing to how first generation immigrants can be targeted because of family ties to China.
The outlet said major US television networks declined to broadcast the speech live on primary channels, a decision Trump rebuked after he had placed unprecedented pressure on American media.
