Turkey set to harvest record wheat crop in 2026-27

The forecast calls for wheat consumption of 18.7 million tonnes in 2026-27, with imports falling to 5 million tonnes as domestic output rises.

Turkey is expected to harvest a record wheat crop in the 2026-27 marketing year, helped by favorable weather and above-average rainfall, the US Department of Agriculture's Foreign Agricultural Service said, according to World Grain.

The FAS expects output to rise year on year and also flagged quality issues in southern and southeastern areas that saw excessive spring rainfall. Western regions that received relatively less spring rain are expected to deliver higher quality and yields, the report said.

Turkey's wheat consumption for 2026-27 is forecast at 18.7 million tonnes, 4% higher than the prior year, supported in part by higher animal feed use. Due to the expected domestic production jump, wheat imports are projected to fall to 5.0 million tonnes from 6.4 million tonnes last year.

The USDA also expects Turkey's barley crop to benefit from abundant rainfall, with production rising 58% year on year to 8.1 million tonnes in 2026-27. Because of the output increase, barley imports are expected to drop to 150,000 tonnes from 1.4 million tonnes.
