Xi Jinping calls for openness at World AI Conference opening

Xi warned against a China centered “one country” approach to AI while urging greater openness as US export controls push Beijing toward self reliance.

President Xi Jinping spoke on Friday at the opening of the 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference, China’s largest annual AI industry event, with his personal attendance lifting the conference’s profile.

According to SCMP Economy, the remarks framed AI development as both a technological imperative and a pillar of China’s geopolitical strategy.

SCMP Economy also tied the push for greater self reliance to Washington’s ongoing restrictions, including export controls on advanced semiconductors and limits on overseas access to top AI models.
