Xi urges Thailand and Cambodia to resolve border dispute
The border fighting last year was the deadliest in more than a decade, leaving over 100 deaths, according to the account of the dispute.
Chinese President Xi Jinping urged Thailand and Cambodia to resolve their long-running border dispute during meetings with both countries’ leaders, according to reporting that cited China’s state news agency Xinhua.
The dispute escalated into the deadliest fighting between the neighbors in more than a decade last year, with more than 100 military and civilian deaths and hundreds of injuries. A ceasefire agreed in December 2025 has largely held, but both sides have continued to accuse each other of breaches.
Xi called for dialogue between the two sides and said China would play a “constructive role.” In a separate meeting with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet, Xi reiterated China’s support for a negotiated solution.
The border clash has centered on competing territorial claims tied to an ancient temple complex, a dispute that has been ongoing for decades and has periodically erupted into violence.
