Lebanon president to outline plan on Hezbollah disarmament to Trump

The meeting is scheduled amid Israeli troop presence in southern Lebanon and continued displacement after Israeli strikes, and Aoun will deliver a written proposal to decommission Hezbollah’s arsenal.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun will make his first trip to the White House this week to meet US President Donald Trump and present a plan aimed at disarming the Iran-backed militant group Hezbollah and securing Israel’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon, according to Reuters via SCMP Economy. The meeting comes at what Reuters described as a crucial moment for Lebanon, with Israeli troops occupying parts of the country’s south and hundreds of thousands of Lebanese remaining displaced after Israeli strikes. Aoun, a former commander of Lebanon’s US-backed army who became president last year, is expected to focus on implementing a US-brokered June 26 agreement between Lebanon and Israel. That deal is designed to disarm Hezbollah, support a progressive Israeli troop withdrawal, and set the stage for peaceful ties. Reuters reported that a Lebanese official said Aoun will bring Trump a written proposal outlining how Hezbollah’s “massive arsenal” could be decommissioned, with Aoun arguing that Trump is the only leader with sufficient leverage to pressure Israel to withdraw and help Lebanon restore sovereignty.
