Peru earthquakes kill at least 6, leave 21 injured

The quakes struck Chupaca province in Junin, about 300 km east of Lima, and preliminary reports said dozens of homes were damaged or destroyed.

At least six people were killed and 21 others were injured after two earthquakes hit a mountainous region of Peru, according to Peru’s civil defence chief, as reported by SCMP Economy.

The first quake measured 5.1 and the second measured 3.7, striking on Saturday night in Chupaca province in the Junin region, about 300 km east of Lima. Peru’s National Seismological Centre said the first earthquake occurred at a depth of 24 km and the second at 18 km, while the European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre earlier put the first quake at magnitude 5.6.

Preliminary reports cited by Peru’s National Civil Defence Institute head Luis Vasquez showed about 48 homes were destroyed and another 18 damaged, affecting around 300 people. Officials said affected residents were being provided tents, in areas where homes are generally rudimentary adobe block structures.
