Abbott probes cyber incidents at cancer diagnostics and LabCentral portal

Abbott said it does not expect any material impact on its business or financial results and reported no known exposure of sensitive customer or business information.

Abbott Laboratories is investigating two separate cyber incidents involving unauthorized access to internal systems at its cancer diagnostics business and at its LabCentral portal, the company said on July 17.

The medical device maker said the incident at its cancer diagnostics unit did not impact other businesses, sites, or systems, and that legacy Exact Sciences systems were separate from Abbott’s systems. Abbott also said a hacker allegedly accessed the LabCentral portal, an externally facing third party hosted site used by Abbott’s core laboratory diagnostics business.

Abbott reported that there was no impact to its businesses or customers and no known exposure of sensitive customer or business information. The company said LabCentral contained publicly available technical product reference documents, including operating manuals, troubleshooting checklists, and product specifications, and did not include proprietary or sensitive information.

Abbott said it has taken steps to address the incidents, engaged outside cybersecurity experts and law enforcement, and is continuing to investigate what information may have been accessed. The company added that it does not expect any material impact on its business or financial results from the incidents, after healthcare firms have increasingly been targeted by cyberattacks.
