India protest over exam irregularities turns violent near parliament
Protesters want Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to resign, citing question paper leaks and technical glitches.
India riot police baton-charged protesters in New Delhi as students tried to march toward parliament on Monday, escalating a demonstration over irregularities in major examinations, according to Agence France-Presse as carried by SCMP Economy.
Protesters ran for cover during charges near the Jantar Mantar protest site, while students said the government should address their demands rather than silence them. The protesters are calling for Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan to step down over allegations including question paper leaks and technical glitches.
SCMP Economy said the protest followed the hospitalization of prominent activist Sonam Wangchuk on Saturday, which ended his hunger strike in support of youths and the satirical Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) movement.
