New York imports more electricity from Canada after CHPE line opens
On July 3, 2026, New York traded 52 gigawatthours of Canadian power, the most since January 2025, after the CHPE transmission line reached commercial operations in May.
According to EIA, New York increased electricity imports from Canada after the Champlain Hudson Power Express, or CHPE, transmission line reached commercial operations in May.
On July 3, 2026, the New York Independent System Operator imported 52 gigawatthours of electricity from Canada, the highest level of trading between the two areas since January 2025.
Some of that imported power flowed along the new CHPE line connecting Quebec, Canada, and New York City, which was formally put into commercial operation in May following the line’s opening.
