Onramp’s report argues investors should favor spot bitcoin over paper claims
Onramp’s July 2026 report, “Back to Basics,” frames bitcoin’s roughly 21 million fixed cap and the gap versus late 2025 highs as a reason to hold the asset itself.
Onramp, a bitcoin custody firm, published a July 2026 research report titled “Back to Basics” that argues spot bitcoin provides stronger long term value than holding “paper” exposure tied to bitcoin prices. Bitcoin Magazine reports that the firm points to a market puzzle where bitcoin is trading at about half of its late 2025 high, while equities and gold sit near their own records.
In the report, Onramp makes the case that money functions as a technology for storing value across time, and it says fiat currencies lose purchasing power by design because expanding supply tends to be captured first by governments and institutions. It also says bitcoin’s 21 million cap is a scarcity mechanism that participants can verify, rather than a limit that depends on trust.
Onramp’s framework also emphasizes bitcoin’s fixed issuance schedule and the role of decentralization in keeping protocol rules credible. It argues authority rests with users who run full nodes rather than miners or firms, and it defends proof of work as a use of energy that it says can include miners consuming flared gas and surplus renewable output.
The report further positions bitcoin as a successor to gold, describing it as similarly scarce and durable while also being able to move globally. Bitcoin Magazine says Onramp divides its argument into fundamentals, the difference between owning the asset versus owning a wrapper, and data intended to support the firm’s view that the current moment favors accumulation.
