Saylor weighs in on Bitcoin BIP-110 ahead of final signaling window
CryptoSlate says live monitoring showed only 0.89% of tracked blocks signaled so far, and the next 2,016-block period is the last full chance to reach the ordinary 55% lock-in threshold.
Michael Saylor has joined the debate over Bitcoin’s proposed BIP-110, arguing against a temporary soft fork that would restrict certain arbitrary-data and script uses at the consensus level, according to CryptoSlate. The proposal is framed as a one-year change, with supporters citing a need to limit data-storage abuse and protect node resources, while critics warn it could invalidate transactions that are currently valid and create a risky consensus precedent.
CryptoSlate reports that live monitoring shows 0.89% signaling, and the current difficulty period cannot reach the proposal’s early-lock threshold because it is already mathematically unable to hit the required level. The editor’s note in the coverage says the fixed block heights mean there is a clear countdown for coordination among miners, enforcing nodes, and economic actors.
Under BIP-110 as described by CryptoSlate, the next 2,016-block period spanning heights 959,616 through 961,631 is the final full opportunity to lock in via the ordinary threshold, which requires 1,109 signaling blocks, roughly 55%. If that period fails, enforcing nodes would require bit 4 from heights 961,632 through 963,647 and reject blocks that omit it, with the monitor estimating the mandatory-signaling window would run about Aug. 8 to Aug. 22, followed by forced lock-in around height 963,648 and latest-path activation around Sept. 5.
CryptoSlate adds that if there is not broad support from mining pools, Bitcoin could split into competing histories, with enforcing nodes potentially rejecting blocks accepted by other nodes. That outcome would shift operational choices for exchanges and businesses, including which chain governs deposits, withdrawals, and confirmations, and would leave mining pools deciding which chain to signal for.
