Trump tells Carney Canada must do more on Ontario wildfire smoke
Wildfire smoke from hundreds of Ontario fires blanketed the US from the Midwest to the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, with New York hitting the most polluted city in the world at one point.
US President Donald Trump said he told Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney that Canada must do more to control Ontario wildfires whose smoke has affected several US states, according to Reuters.
Trump said he spoke with Carney at the FIFA World Cup final, which both attended, and indicated Canada should pay damages or face tariffs after he had threatened additional tariffs the day before.
Reuters reports the smoke came from hundreds of fires in Ontario and spread across a broad swath of the United States, prompting warnings for residents to stay indoors where possible.
The report said that at one point on Saturday, New York became the most polluted city in the world, with Toronto and Washington following closely, according to air tracker IQAir.
