Alibaba Qwen set to power Apple Intelligence in China
Apple Intelligence approval in China would shift major parts of the iPhone AI experience to Alibaba's Qwen model, while Alibaba shares rose about 5% in Hong Kong after the reports.
Apple has reportedly secured approval to launch Apple Intelligence in China after nearly two years of regulatory delays, with Alibaba’s Qwen large language model expected to power much of the AI experience, according to Yahoo Finance.
Under the arrangement, Qwen is expected to support Apple Intelligence features in China including text generation, image understanding, and conversational AI, while Baidu is described as supporting other Siri-related functions.
For Alibaba, the potential rollout comes as it seeks to be valued as a generative AI leader rather than primarily an e-commerce company, with the deal seen as validating its AI infrastructure investment and creating opportunities to monetize its models across Apple devices.
The report also cited market reaction and recent performance, noting Alibaba’s Hong Kong-listed shares climbed about 5% after the partnership reports, and that Alibaba’s Q4 results showed revenue up 3% year over year to 243.38 billion yuan, with net income at 23.5 billion yuan, up 96%.
