Europe’s 20 largest insurers grow 2025 premiums 4.6% to €922.8B

Combined premiums at Europe’s largest insurers rose 4.6% in 2025, with growth slowing from 2024, and capital positions strengthened as conditions improved.

MAPFRE Economics, the research arm of Spain-based insurer MAPFRE, said Europe’s 20 largest insurance groups increased premium income during 2025, though growth slowed from the prior year.

The groups generated combined premiums of €922.8 billion in 2025, up 4.6% year over year, and MAPFRE Economics described the market as maintaining stable growth despite ongoing economic uncertainty.

The research attributed the premium rise partly to stronger investment performance linked to the prevailing interest rate environment, with Life and Non-Life businesses both expanding by roughly 4.5%.

MAPFRE Economics also said insurers strengthened their capital positions, and that international expansion has leveled off, with business written outside domestic markets and their five largest overseas markets at 13.6% of total premiums in 2025.
