France approves bill to ban social media for children under 15

The National Assembly passed the measure 279 to 81, and President Emmanuel Macron said enforcement would start by September after review by the Constitutional Council.

France’s parliament has approved a bill that would ban children under 15 from accessing social media, making the country the first in Europe to bar minors from apps such as TikTok.

According to SCMP Economy, the bill cleared the Senate earlier and then passed the National Assembly on Tuesday by a vote of 279 to 81.

President Emmanuel Macron has backed the measure as a flagship reform of his final term and said the Constitutional Council must rule on the bill before it can take effect.

Macron also pledged to begin enforcing the restriction by September, positioning the law as a way to protect children and teenagers online amid growing restrictions in other countries.
