Guthrie AI raises $4M seed to expand AI bid assistant for contractors

The Philly-based PropTech startup plans to grow its staff from six to 10 or 12, with new hires focused on engineering and improving automation beyond the current 10% level.

A Philadelphia-based construction bidding startup, Guthrie AI, has closed its inaugural seed round, raising $4 million to expand beyond its current roster of 52 clients, according to Bisnow.

The company helps specialty contractors with estimation and other preconstruction tasks, beginning with work for window glazing firms before broadening to other contractor categories, and it provides each client with a dedicated personal bid assistant to handle paperwork required to submit bids.

While founder Ted Baumgardner said the platform is only about 10% automated today, the remaining work is carried out by personnel, including a team that includes roughly a dozen domestic workers and about 60 overseas employees in locations such as India and the Philippines.

Bisnow reports that the June 30 close will fund hiring more engineers, primarily in the U.S., with automation expected to improve in areas like identifying relevant bid components and supporting construction document review, which Baumgardner characterized as the next stage of spatial reasoning for AI.
