FSG begins talks to sell a 30% stake in Liverpool to Amit Bhatia group
The proposed minority sale would value Liverpool at about £4.5bn, with an offer around £1.35bn on the table.
Fenway Sports Group, Liverpool’s owner, has begun negotiations with an investment consortium led by Amit Bhatia about a potential minority share sale, according to a statement FSG provided to the Financial Times, as described by the Guardian Business.
The talks center on selling 30% of Liverpool, with an offer of around £1.35bn discussed, which would value the club at about £4.5bn. The consortium is backed by Lakshmi Mittal, the billionaire Indian steel magnate.
The Guardian Business said FSG paid £300m to take control of Liverpool in 2010 and is positioned for a return if the deal proceeds. It also noted that Bhatia resigned as a director of Queens Park Rangers on Tuesday after 19 years, in a sign of the consortium’s seriousness.
The Guardian Business compared the reported valuation with recent Premier League ownership transactions, including Chelsea’s purchase by the Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital group for £4.25bn and Sir Jim Ratcliffe’s 2024 acquisition of a 25% stake in Manchester United that valued the club at £4.3bn.
