Galaxy Digital funds Bitcoin quantum readiness initiative
Galaxy Digital will run the program across up to $5 million in developer grants, in-house research, and a new Quantum Advisory Council as it targets when quantum systems could enable forged Bitcoin signatures.
Galaxy Digital has launched a Bitcoin Quantum Readiness Initiative aimed at preparing the network for the potential impact of powerful quantum computers, including a scenario researchers describe as “Q-Day,” when quantum machines could use Shor’s algorithm to forge Bitcoin signatures and drain vulnerable wallets.
According to Decrypt, the initiative is built around three pillars, including up to $5 million in developer grants for post-quantum solutions, a research program through Galaxy Research, and a Quantum Advisory Council made up of academic experts.
The Nasdaq-listed firm said it expects to begin accepting grant applications immediately, and it plans to publish analysis through Galaxy Research while convening the council to help harden Bitcoin against the eventual arrival of more capable quantum hardware.
Momentum around the timeline is also building across the industry, with Decrypt noting that Project Eleven is working toward a cryptographically relevant quantum computer by 2030 to 2033, and that Coinbase has been urging developers to start migration work now.
