Houthis warn tankers against using Saudi ports on the Red Sea
Two oil tankers loaded with Saudi crude for China and India made U-turns and redirected toward the Suez canal after the warning.
Yemen’s Iran-aligned Houthis warned shipping companies that tankers could be attacked if they use Saudi Arabian ports on the Red Sea, as the group moved quickly to enforce a blockade announced the previous day, according to the Guardian Business.
The outlet said the threat, on top of Iran’s pressure on the strait of Hormuz, could disrupt substantial Saudi oil exports and deepen a rapidly escalating Middle East crisis.
The Guardian Business reported that two tankers that had loaded Saudi crude this week for China and India made U-turns on Tuesday and headed toward the Suez canal, with the Houthis claiming six ships had changed course.
The article also notes that US President Donald Trump said the US would “take care of business” if the Houthis carried out their threats, as diplomats sought to salvage an interim Iran-US deal amid renewed fighting.
