India tops global long-term LNG buying in 2025 at 8.4 MTPA
GIIGNL said India’s long-term LNG contracts in 2025 totaled 8.4 million tons per year, while the global LNG market added 83 long-term sales and purchase agreements.
India became the world’s most active long-term buyer of liquefied natural gas in 2025, contracting a total of 8.4 million tons per year, according to the annual 2026 report from the International Group of LNG Importers, known as GIIGNL, as covered by OilPrice.
The report says India added its eighth LNG import terminal last year and is targeting a near doubling of natural gas’s role in its energy mix to about 15% over the next decade.
GIIGNL also cited India as the most active end-user market in 2025, with 8.4 MTPA in total contracts disclosed across six entities, including IndianOil at 4.7 MTPA, GAIL at 1 MTPA, GSPC at 1 MTPA, Torrent Power at 0.69 MTPA, BPCL at 0.5 MTPA, and HPCL with an undisclosed amount.
For the broader LNG industry, 2025 was described as an exceptionally active year for long-term contracting, with 83 long-term sales and purchase agreements signed, nearly double the 47 agreed in 2024, and disclosed newly contracted volumes reaching 71.6 MTPA, about 30% higher than the prior year.
