Indian stocks slip as Middle East tensions weigh on sentiment

The Sensex fell 443 points, or 0.6%, to 77,708.5, while the Nifty 50 dropped 96 points, or 0.4%, ending lower ahead of a weaker open signaled by Gift Nifty.

Indian benchmark indices closed lower on Monday, July 20, with the Sensex down 443 points, or 0.57%, to finish at 77,708.52, and the Nifty 50 off 96 points, or 0.39%, to end at 24,238.50, as weak global sentiment intensified amid escalating tensions between the United States and Iran.

Broader participation was mixed, with the Nifty Midcap 100 rising 0.60% and the Nifty Smallcap 100 gaining 0.16%, but Gift Nifty pointed to a negative start for Tuesday, July 21, trading near 24,154 and down more than 105 points from the prior Nifty futures close.

Market-watch coverage highlighted the risk-off mood attributed to geopolitical concerns in the Middle East, elevated crude oil prices, persistent foreign portfolio investor selling, and continued weakness in the Indian rupee, according to commentary included in the roundup.

In stock-specific notes for Tuesday, the segment pointed to Q1 results for companies including Bajaj Auto, Adani Energy Solutions, Indian Hotels Company, TVS Motor Company, JSW Infrastructure, and Adani Total Gas, alongside company updates such as a SEBI fine of ₹1 crore on CDSL for cybersecurity and operational deficiencies tied to a malware attack in November 2022, and Paytm owner One97 Communications posting a 79% year-on-year net profit increase to ₹220 crore for the quarter.
