Trump pledges to help Lebanon, authorizes US airline direct flights
The pledge came as the Lebanese army began deploying in southern areas under a US-backed framework agreement with Israel.
SCMP Economy, citing a Tuesday meeting at the White House, said US President Donald Trump pledged to help Lebanon “a lot” as President Joseph Aoun sought Washington’s backing for efforts to disarm Hezbollah and pursue peace with Israel.
According to the report, Aoun, the first Lebanese president invited to Washington since 2009, asked Trump for political support and for continued backing of the Lebanese Armed Forces, saying that “without the LAF, everything will collapse,” as the army began deploying in southern areas under a US-backed framework agreement with Israel.
After the talks, Trump said he would authorize the resumption of direct flights by US airlines to Lebanon, which had been suspended more than 40 years ago after a 1985 TWA hijacking involving Lebanese Islamist militants with many Americans aboard.
