W. R. Berkley posts record $4.1 billion in Q2 gross written premiums

Gross written premiums rose to $4.1 billion in Q2 2026 from $4.0 billion a year earlier, while the insurer reported $317.5 million in pre-tax underwriting income.

W. R. Berkley Corporation reported record gross written premiums of $4.1 billion for the second quarter of 2026, up from $3.97 billion in Q2 2025, according to an update from Reinsurance News. For the first six months of 2026, GWP totaled $7.9 billion, compared with $7.6 billion in the first half of 2025.

The company said its insurance segment contributed the most, generating $3.8 billion of Q2 2026 GWP and $7.1 billion for H1 2026. In contrast, its reinsurance segment produced $341 million in GWP for Q2 2026 and $838 million for H1 2026.

W. R. Berkley reported net written premiums of $3.43 billion in Q2 2026, broadly stable versus $3.4 billion in Q2 2025. Net premiums earned were $3.2 billion for the quarter, compared with $3.1 billion a year earlier.

On profitability, the firm reported 21.8% growth in pre-tax underwriting income to $317.5 million in Q2 2026. The combined ratio was 90%, after a current accident year combined ratio before catastrophe losses of 88.1%, and catastrophe losses were $62 million in Q2 2026 versus $99.2 million in Q2 2025.
