W.R. Berkley Q2 net income rises 12.7% as combined ratio improves

The commercial insurer posted a 90.0% consolidated combined ratio, while Q2 accident-year catastrophe losses fell to about $62.4 million from about $99.2 million a year earlier.

W.R. Berkley Corp. reported second-quarter 2026 net income increased about 12.7% from the prior year period to about $452.3 million, according to Insurance Journal.

Operating income rose to $497.1 million from $420.5 million a year earlier. The company’s consolidated combined ratio improved to 90.0% from 91.6% in Q2 2025, with its insurance segment combined ratio at 91.4% versus 92.1% a year ago.

W.R. Berkley said its reinsurance and monoline excess segment combined ratio decreased to 79.3% from 87.4%. It also reported total accident-year catastrophe losses of about $62.4 million, down from about $99.2 million in Q2 2025.

The insurer said it grew gross and net premiums written by 5.4% and 3.7%, to about $3.43 billion, respectively. Insurance Journal also reported W.R. Berkley returned capital to shareholders through $223 million of regular and special dividends and $112 million of share repurchases.
