Europe heatwave wipes out 9m tonnes of grain, costing farmers about €2bn

Coceral estimates the damage would leave the EU member states and the UK with their smallest combined harvest since 2018.

European heatwave conditions are expected to cut grain harvests sharply, with a major loss in production estimated after record June temperatures across western Europe, according to the Guardian Business.

Coceral, the European cereals and oilseeds trade association, estimated the heatwave destroyed about 9 million tonnes of crops and cost grain farmers roughly €2 billion in lost revenue, raising concerns about the downstream impact on food prices.

The losses span wheat, barley, maize, and oats, with maize affected during crucial pollination and wheat hit during grain fill, when cereals need moisture for yield development.

In France, expected grain reductions include about 3.4 million tonnes of maize lost, with the cost of the damaged crop estimated at €891 million, with other sizeable losses forecast for Hungary and Spain.
