Galaxy Digital pledges up to $5M to prep Bitcoin for quantum era
Galaxy says quantum computers cannot crack Bitcoin signatures today, and its grant focuses on milestones like post-quantum signature integration and security audits that could take years of coordinated upgrades.
Galaxy Digital has pledged up to $5 million to help Bitcoin prepare for the quantum era, with funding aimed at accelerating development milestones, research, and a new Quantum Advisory Council, according to CryptoSlate.
The initiative targets multiple links in the migration process, including reviews of quantum-resistant transaction proposals, post-quantum signature integration, formal security audits, and software and institutional migration tools. Galaxy said quantum computers cannot crack Bitcoin’s signature security today, but the program is intended to get migration work moving before the threat becomes practical.
Galaxy also emphasized that coordination is the central constraint because decentralized governance requires developers, miners, node operators, wallets, exchanges, custodians, and users to agree on upgrades, which it described as potentially taking years to design, test, and deploy.
On the technical side, the piece describes two risk windows, one involving Shor’s algorithm to recover a private key from an exposed elliptic-curve public key, and another tied to information that can become visible onchain or in the mempool. It notes that draft BIP 360 would add a soft-fork upgrade for a Pay-to-Merkle-Root output to reduce long-term exposure by dropping Taproot’s key path, while leaving room for stronger signature schemes later.
