Hormuz tensions are reshaping energy and security calculations in Asia

With the Strait of Hormuz moving into focus, analysts say Southeast Asian governments are adjusting security and alliance planning as oil supplies face heightened risk.

OilPrice reports that Southeast Asia is increasingly viewing the Middle East, particularly the Strait of Hormuz, as a potential driver of regional power shifts, rather than focusing mainly on Taiwan, the South China Sea, and China’s military rise.

The outlet highlights that the Strait of Hormuz is strategically important because it carries roughly a fifth of the world’s oil, and that tensions involving Iran have made the energy chokepoint harder for Southeast Asian governments to ignore.

According to OilPrice, analysts say the consequences of renewed attention to the Hormuz are already affecting regional calculations for security, diplomacy, and alliances, as governments weigh how energy risks could translate into broader security decisions.

OilPrice also cites a Manila-based threat intelligence analyst, Lester Joseph Buitizon, who said ASEAN is moving toward greater energy reliance tied to Russia, in the context of what he described as shifting energy dynamics.
