Indonesia nutrition agency chief resigns amid probe and budget cuts

The resignation marks the second leadership change at the National Nutrition Agency in a little over a month.

The head of Indonesia’s National Nutrition Agency overseeing President Prabowo Subianto’s flagship free meals programme resigned, citing health reasons, according to Reuters.

Nanik Sudaryati Deyang, who had taken over the agency in June, said she would seek treatment overseas for a heart complaint and that extreme stress has affected her health, adding that the president had agreed to her stepping down.

Her exit comes after budget cuts and a criminal investigation into the free meals scheme, which has faced logistical challenges, concerns about food quality and multiple cases of mass food poisoning since the programme launched in January 2025.

Reuters also reported that Deyang said Prabowo was considering forming a supervisory board for the agency and that she had been asked to lead it, while noting the programme is framed as an intervention to support children’s nutrition rather than a political issue.
