Judge orders Trump to disclose business financial details in BBC lawsuit
The ruling also allows the BBC to subpoena dozens of people tied to Trump’s inner circle as part of discovery in the $10bn defamation case.
A US federal judge ruled that Donald Trump must disclose detailed financial information about businesses tied to the Trump family trust in the president’s $10bn defamation lawsuit against the British Broadcasting Corporation, according to the Guardian Business. The decision was made during a discovery hearing on Tuesday.
The judge, US magistrate judge Enjoliqué Lett, said the disclosures could shed light on the hundreds of businesses owned by the trust, while also underscoring a potential downside to Trump’s broader strategy of pursuing multibillion-dollar lawsuits against critical media, the outlet reported.
Trump filed the defamation suit late last year seeking $10bn in damages over a 2024 BBC documentary, “Trump, A Second Chance,” which includes an edited scene of Trump speaking before the 6 January 2021 Capitol attack. The BBC apologized for the misleading edit but has argued the defamation claims lack merit.
Lett also permitted the BBC to seek subpoenas for dozens of members of Trump’s inner circle, aimed at uncovering evidence of Trump’s thoughts and intentions on January 6, the Guardian Business said, citing Bloomberg News. The subpoenas would target family members and key advisers including Donald Trump Jr, Steve Bannon, and Stephen Miller, while Trump’s lawyers sought to limit the financial-record release by discussing a potential amended complaint.
