US says Iran war costs have reached $37.5 billion
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers the figure includes spending and anticipated costs through September 30.
The United States’ war in Iran has cost US$37.5 billion so far, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth told lawmakers during a hearing in Washington, according to SCMP Economy citing Reuters.
Hegseth said the total includes certain aspects of the conflict as well as anticipated costs through September 30, though it was unclear how the Pentagon arrived at the number.
The report notes that a Reuters source previously said the Trump administration estimated the first six days of the war had cost at least US$11.3 billion.
It also says Trump requested nearly US$90 billion in additional funding last month, most of it tied to the Iran conflict, setting up another fight with lawmakers as midterm elections approach.
