Philippine impeachment court allows prosecutors to examine key records
The Senate impeachment court ruling clears a path for prosecutors to use financial records tied to one of the four impeachment articles, raising legal and political risk ahead of the 2028 election.
Philippine Vice-President Sara Duterte-Carpio faced a setback in her impeachment trial after the Senate impeachment court allowed prosecutors to examine key financial records in an unexplained wealth case, according to SCMP Economy.
Analysts said the decision could help prosecutors build their case that she amassed ill-gotten wealth, and may affect her popularity ratings in time for the 2028 presidential election.
The court’s presiding officer, Francis “Chiz” Escudero, ruled on Monday that the records could be opened in connection with one of the four impeachment articles against Duterte-Carpio, whose trial has become a test of her political survival and accountability for a prominent political family.
Duterte-Carpio, in a Facebook livestream on November 23, 2024, said she had already hired a hitman to assassinate the three of them if she were killed.
