Sony and Alamo Drafthouse secure long-term lease to reopen Cinerama Dome
The reopened Cinerama Dome is expected in early 2028, with renovations starting next month to preserve its 86-foot curved screen.
Sony Pictures Entertainment and its Alamo Drafthouse Cinema subsidiary have secured a long-term lease to restore and reopen the Cinerama Dome on Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, along with the adjacent 14-screen former ArcLight Cinemas complex, Commercial Observer reported.
The theaters were dark for six years after closing during the pandemic, and the Dome is now expected to return in early 2028. Renovations are set to begin next month, including work aimed at preserving the venue’s 86-foot-wide curved screen and large-format presentation.
Alamo will operate the landmark Cinerama Dome, but the theater will not offer dine-in service like typical Alamo locations, the outlet said. The neighboring former ArcLight multiplex will reopen as an Alamo Drafthouse with dine-in service, 4K laser projection, and 70-millimeter cinematic capabilities.
Commercial Observer also noted that Sony acquired Alamo Drafthouse in 2024, and that the Cinerama Dome opened in 1963. The article said the venue is a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument and has served as a premier site for 70-millimeter films.
