US lawmakers accuse China of using UN peacekeepers for spying
Lawmakers said China’s peacekeeping footprint is concentrated near Belt and Road corridors, ports, mineral resources, and potential basing sites.
Lawmakers at a House Foreign Affairs Committee hearing in Washington accused China of using its UN peacekeeping footprint as a cover for espionage, citing concerns about where missions are concentrated. According to SCMP Economy, Republicans questioned whether China’s growing presence could also advance intelligence and military objectives in strategically sensitive areas.
Sheri Biggs, a Republican from South Carolina, said China’s peacekeeping department is concentrated near Belt and Road corridors, ports, mineral resources, and existing or potential basing locations. She characterized those locations as long-standing concerns about whether the UN designation is being used for dual purposes.
The outlet also reports that, while acknowledging the peacekeeping label, lawmakers expressed broader skepticism about the role such missions may play on the ground for the Chinese Communist Party.
