China reports 4.3% Q2 GDP growth while Western ties tighten
Beijing kept its annual growth target in reach after second-quarter GDP rose 4.3%, even as Pew data showed China’s favorability beat the US in 25 of 37 countries.
China’s domestic economy posted second-quarter gross domestic product growth of 4.3 per cent, according to SCMP Economy, with the result described as softer than the first quarter but sufficient to keep China’s annual growth goal within reach.
The outlet also cited fresh survey data showing China’s favorability surpassed that of the United States in 25 of 37 nations surveyed by Pew Research Centre, including key European countries.
SCMP Economy said this set up an expectation that Beijing could capitalize on divisions among Western allies, but instead China faces narrowing diplomatic options.
The report added that the earlier assumption that the US would be distracted by Trump’s trade wars and isolationist rhetoric would allow China to court a more autonomous European Union has run into tighter diplomatic constraints.
