China sees favorability edge over US across key European countries
China’s second-quarter GDP grew 4.3 percent, helping keep its annual growth target in reach as diplomacy options narrow.
South China Morning Post reports that recent polling shows China’s favorability rising above the United States across 25 of 37 nations surveyed by Pew Research Centre, including key European countries, a shift that would normally offer Beijing a diplomatic boost.
The outlet also ties the backdrop to China’s domestic growth, saying second-quarter gross domestic product rose 4.3 percent, slower than the first financial quarter but still consistent with keeping China’s annual target within reach.
However, the story argues Beijing cannot easily exploit gaps among Western allies, as diplomatic options are narrowing even with perceived US distractions from trade tensions and isolationist rhetoric, according to SCMP Economy.
The article frames the strategy as an effort to court a more autonomous European Union, stabilize two large export markets, and project an image of reliable global leadership despite the constraints it faces.
