EUR/CHF jumps above 0.9278 as oil revives euro zone inflation risks
The euro crossed above 0.9278 amid a rebound in Brent crude above $95, shifting traders toward a more hawkish ECB interpretation even with the deposit rate at 2.25% expected to stay unchanged.
EUR/CHF extended its rally after the pair broke decisively above 0.9278 this week, a move Action Forex links to renewed inflation concerns in Europe as energy prices rise again.
The outlet said oil has reversed from the earlier easing narrative that followed a June 17 60 day ceasefire, which had pushed Brent crude toward around $70 in early July. That ceasefire later collapsed, military conflict resumed, shipping risks around the Strait of Hormuz intensified, and Brent climbed back above $95.
Ahead of the European Central Bank meeting, the deposit rate is widely expected to remain unchanged at 2.25%, with the decision largely priced in. Attention is instead on whether ECB President Christine Lagarde pushes back against hawkish repricing already underway in FX markets.
Action Forex noted that because oil is now surging rather than falling, the inflation outlook facing policymakers has changed, and markets appear to have recognized that shift before the ECB responds. With geopolitical developments moving quickly, the piece said Lagarde may emphasize upside inflation risks, the high uncertainty around the Middle East and Strait of Hormuz, and continued data dependence rather than firm forward guidance.
