Mapfre to buy Safety Insurance Group for about $1.54 billion

Safety shareholders will receive $105 per share, a 44% premium to Safety’s July 23, 2026 closing price.

Mapfre has agreed to acquire Safety Insurance Group in an all-cash deal valued at approximately $1.54 billion, according to Coverager.

Under the terms of the agreement, Safety shareholders will receive $105 per share, which the outlet says represents a 44% premium to Safety’s closing stock price on July 23, 2026.

Safety is a property and casualty insurer focused on Massachusetts and the broader New England market, and following the transaction it will become a wholly owned subsidiary of Mapfre USA while continuing to operate under the Safety brand.

Coverager reports the deal was unanimously approved by Safety’s board and approved by Mapfre’s board, and it is expected to close in the first quarter of 2027, subject to shareholder and regulatory approvals, including approval from the Massachusetts insurance commissioner.
