News Corp countersues Brave over alleged AI article scraping
News Corp is asking a federal court for an injunction and damages up to $150,000 per infringement, arguing Brave’s “covert scraping” reduces publishers’ incentives to license content to AI firms.
News Corp has filed a countersuit against Brave Software in federal court over Brave’s use of Wall Street Journal and New York Post content for AI companies, according to Reuters. The dispute follows Brave’s earlier lawsuit seeking a declaration that its practices are legal.
In its Tuesday filing in the Oakland, California, federal court, News Corp accused Brave of unauthorized “covert scraping” and resale of copyrighted articles that it said falls outside fair use. The media company argued that the more content Brave copies and sells, the less incentive AI companies have to negotiate licenses with the publishers that produced the material.
News Corp is seeking an injunction and unspecified monetary damages, with damages of up to $150,000 per infringement. Brave and its lawyers did not immediately respond to requests for comment outside business hours.
The competing lawsuits are part of broader litigation between publishers and technology companies over how copyrighted content can be used to support AI. Brave sued News Corp in March 2025 after receiving a cease-and-desist letter, and News Corp Chief Executive Robert Thomson said Brave’s actions reflect a “blatant disregard” for damage to how information is shared.
