Shanghai unveils plan to expand shipping services and tech-led hub
The port aims to support multimodal transport with new shipping insurance products, while handling more than 55 million TEU containers in 2025 and targeting at least 58 million TEU by 2030.
Shanghai has unveiled a five-year roadmap to strengthen its shipping-services industry and boost its bid to become a leading international maritime hub, using technology such as artificial intelligence and automation to improve efficiency, according to SCMP Economy.
The plan looks beyond cargo volume, targeting a higher rank among global shipping centers by expanding value-added services including shipping insurance ecosystems, new specialized insurance products for multimodal transport, ship financing and leasing, and arbitration intended to handle more foreign cases.
At a press conference, Shanghai vice-mayor He Qing said the city would also work on branding initiatives such as the Shanghai Shipping Index and pursue a world-class shipping exchange.
The plan cites that Shanghai handled more than 55 million 20-foot equivalent unit containers in 2025, the most globally, with a forecast to reach at least 58 million TEU by 2030.
