Typhoon risk rises as storm nears Hong Kong and Guangdong coast
Forecaster guidance projects maximum sustained winds near 120 km/h and strong winds, heavy showers and thunderstorms along Guangdong from late Saturday into Sunday.
A tropical depression near the Philippines is expected to intensify into a typhoon and move closer to Hong Kong over the weekend, according to SCMP Economy. The forecaster said the system will enter the northeastern part of the South China Sea later this week and intensify progressively, with a higher chance of moving toward the vicinity of the coast of eastern Guangdong.
The Hong Kong Observatory said the latest track forecast calls for a landfall in Huilai county in Jieyang, Guangdong, as a typhoon, with maximum sustained winds near the center of about 120 km/h early on Sunday. The projected landfall area is less than 400 km east of Hong Kong.
Under the system's influence, strong winds, heavy squally showers and thunderstorms are expected along the Guangdong coast from late Saturday to Sunday, the forecaster added. Swells are also expected.
