US commercial insurance rates fall slower than global market

Marsh data shows global rates dropped 6% in Q2 2026, while the US fell 2%, with US property rates down 13% but casualty up 7%.

Commercial insurance pricing continued to ease globally in the second quarter of 2026, but the US remained unusually resistant, according to Marsh’s latest Global Insurance Market Index.

Marsh said global rates fell an average of 6% in Q2 2026, marking the eighth straight quarter of declines, with the drop larger than the 5% seen in Q1. By contrast, US rates fell just 2%, extending its position as the slowest-moving market among the regions Marsh tracks.

The report also highlighted divergent performance within the US. Global property rates fell 12%, while global casualty rates rose 2%, and the US drove most of that casualty increase, with US composite casualty rates up 7% after a 9% rise in Q1.

Marsh noted the market dynamics behind the price softening, pointing to insurer profitability, ample capital, cheaper reinsurance costs, and stronger investment returns that are intensifying competition. It added that US property rates fell 13% and that composite US composite rates had the smallest decline of any region in the index.
