Canadian retail sales rise supports modest Q2 consumption view

TD Securities said May retail sales increased 1.0% month on month, and flash data pointed to a further 0.4% nominal gain in June.

TD Securities estimates Canadian retail sales rose 1.0% month on month in May, a pace that matched consensus but came in slightly below the firm forecast. The gains were described as broad based, led by categories including gasoline stations, autos, general merchandise and sporting goods.

The note also highlighted that real sales were softer, but still suggest a modest rise in Q2 goods consumption. It cited flash data indicating another 0.4% nominal increase in June.

FXStreet summarized additional market context around FX and broader risk sentiment, noting that investors were watching Middle East developments alongside inflation related concerns, while currency moves were largely described as capped or limited during the session.

In the same roundup, FXStreet also pointed to other market signals such as a modest US dollar pullback and separate crypto and gold moves, but the Canadian consumption read centered on the retail sales figures and the June flash estimate.
