Crypto wrench attacks surged as exposure hit $124.1 million in H1 2026

CertiK counted 52 verified wrench-attack incidents in H1 2026, up 33.3% year over year, and Europe accounted for 39 of the cases.

CertiK says crypto-related wrench attacks, physical-coercion crimes that force a holder to unlock wallets or authorize transfers, surged in the first half of 2026. In a report released July 23, the security firm tracked 52 verified incidents across all attack types, up from 39 a year earlier.

The increase also showed up in financial exposure. CertiK estimated roughly $124.1 million in losses and ransom demands in H1 2026, versus about $10.5 million in H1 2025, an 11.8-fold rise.

The report argues the core issue is custody design, not only digital security, because a frightened person can compel immediate access to value. CertiK recommends removing unilateral authority over significant funds, using architectures such as multisignature or multiparty computation with geographically distributed signers, and adding layers like withdrawal delays, transaction caps, allowlists, staged vaults, and emergency freeze capabilities.

CertiK also warned that attackers can build targeting profiles by combining leaked databases, tax or compliance records, exchange customer data, public wallet activity, social profiles, and information about identity and addresses, potentially including family, routines, and estimated wealth. It noted the visible concentration in its dataset, with Europe accounting for 39 cases and France for 33.
