ICC member states vote to dismiss prosecutor Karim Khan

The decision sets up an election process for a new ICC prosecutor, with a vote not expected until next year.

Member states of the International Criminal Court voted to remove prosecutor Karim Khan, with the ICC announcing the dismissal on Friday.

According to Reuters, diplomats involved in the executive bureau had previously recommended firing Khan over allegations that he had an inappropriate sexual relationship with a junior ICC lawyer, citing documents seen by the outlet.

At the vote, a majority of 82 states parties decided Khan committed serious misconduct and a serious breach of duty, triggering his removal, the president of the governing body, Paivi Kaukoranta, said.

Khan’s dismissal immediately starts the process to elect a new ICC prosecutor, which is not expected to be voted in before next year, while his lawyer, Tayab Ali, said Khan will challenge the decision through legal mechanisms.
