Indian stocks extend losses as US-Iran tensions, oil lift risk aversion

The Nifty 50 finished at 23,869, while the Sensex fell 363 points to 76,391, and the Bank Nifty dropped 534 points to 56,592.

Indian equities extended their decline for a fourth straight session on Thursday as risk sentiment stayed under pressure from intensifying US-Iran tensions, higher crude oil prices, and concerns about renewed global AI spending, LiveMint Markets reported.

The Nifty 50 fell below 23,900 to close at 23,869. The BSE Sensex dropped 363 points to 76,391, and the Bank Nifty ended down 534 points at 56,592.

Sector performance was broadly negative, with real estate stocks leading declines at nearly 1.8%, followed by capital markets down around 1.2%, while banking and financials also remained pressured. Media and automobile names were among the few areas of relative resilience, outpacing the broader market.

Ahead of the open on Friday, the “Gift Nifty” indicated a gap down, trading about 175 points below Thursday’s spot Nifty close of 23,869 by 7:10 AM. Vaishali Parekh, Vice President of Technical Research at Prabhudas Lilladher, said sentiment may turn weaker if the Nifty 50 breaks below 23,800, with the index potentially testing the 23,000 area next.
