Japan CPI rises 1.7% YoY in June, lifting USD/JPY

Core CPI excluding fresh food met expectations at 1.6% YoY, while USD/JPY was last up 0.4% to 163.82 after the release.

Japan’s National Consumer Price Index rose 1.7% year over year in June, up from 1.5% previously, according to data released by the Japan Statistics Bureau, with the figure matching market consensus.

The report also showed the CPI excluding fresh food at 1.6% YoY versus 1.4% prior, while CPI excluding fresh food and energy rose 1.7% YoY, down from 1.8%.

Following the inflation data, FXStreet said the USD/JPY pair was up 0.4% on the day to 163.82, as traders digested the implications for interest-rate expectations tied to inflation.
